چکیده
We obtain exact self-similar solutions to an inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation, describing propagation of optical pulses in fiber amplifiers with distributed dispersion and gain. We show that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between such self-similar waves and solitons of the standard, homogeneous, nonlinear Schrödinger equation if a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. As this correspondence guarantees the stability of the novel self-similar waves, we refer to them as {\it similaritons}. We demonstrate that, the character of similariton interactions crucially depends on the sign of the similariton phase chirp. In particular, we show that the similariton interactions can under certain conditions lead to the formation of molecule-like bound states of two similaritons.

Suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers using a linearly chirped diode laser.
The output of high power fiber amplifiers is typically limited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). An analysis of SBS with a chirped pump laser indicates that a chirp of 2.5 × 10(15) Hz/s could raise, by an order of magnitude, the SBS threshold of a 20-m fiber. A diode laser with a constant output power and a linear chirp of 5 × 10(15) Hz/s has been previously demonstrated. In a low-power...
متن کاملNonlinear interaction of two or more similaritons in loss- and dispersion-managed fibers
We study the nonlinear interaction of two or more fundamental and higher-order similaritons. In particular, we consider the bright similaritons, propagating in nonlinear fibers whose gain–loss and anomalous dispersion vary along the fiber. We first focus on the situation such that the similaritons propagate with the same velocity but are spaced closely enough to overlap. Similar to the soliton ...
متن کاملPhase-locking and coherent power combining of broadband linearly chirped optical waves.
We propose, analyze and demonstrate the optoelectronic phase-locking of optical waves whose frequencies are chirped continuously and rapidly with time. The optical waves are derived from a common optoelectronic swept-frequency laser based on a semiconductor laser in a negative feedback loop, with a precisely linear frequency chirp of 400 GHz in 2 ms. In contrast to monochromatic waves, a differ...
متن کاملDesign optimization of chirped FBG as a dispersion compensator
Chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) provides an attractive solution for low cost dispersion compensation in a fiber optic transmission system. The present work carries out the design optimization of a chirped FBG in respect of chirp bandwidth and apodisation profile in achieving optimum dispersion compensation in a 40Gbps optical transmission link for different modulation formats.
